Usenet by e-mail
Usenet is a world-wide distributed discussion system. It consists of a set of “newsgroups” (currently numbering over 55000) with names that ar classified hierarchically by subject. “Articles” or “messages” are “posted” to these newsgroups by people on computers with the appropriate software (Newsreader program) — these articles are then broadcast to other interconnected computer systems via a wide variety of networks. Some newsgroups are “moderated”; in these newsgroups, the articles are first sent to a moderator for approval before appearing in the newsgroup.
To begin understanding Usenet, you should first retrieve the Usenet new users intro document.
Send e-mail to: mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu Enter only this line in the body of the note:
send usenet/news.answers/news-newusers-intro
To get a listing of Usenet newsgroups, add these commands to your note:
send usenet/news.answers/active-newsgroups/* send usenet/news.answers/alt-hierarchies/*
The active newsgroups consists of 3 parts which will be returned in 5 e-mail messages. The alternate hierarchies are in 5 parts and will be returned to you in 9 messages.
When you have reviewed the listings, it is always a good idea to get the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) file(s) for a given newsgroup. Send e-mail to: mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu with the command:
index usenet/[newsgroup]
You must replace “[newsgroup]” with the name of the Usenet newsgroup you wish the index for. Substitute dots (“.”)for dashes (“-“) if they appear in the newsgroup name. If any FAQ files are available, they will be listed in the returned message, and you can request them with a command like:
send usenet/[newsgroup]/[faqfilename]
Or on the Web in text format at: Usenet FAQs Listing
Here are some more documents that you should retrieve and read if you are interested in posting to Usenet newsgroups. They offer many handy hints on usage, style, do’s and don’ts, descriptions of what Usenet is, what are moderated newsgroups, how to post, how to find the right group to post in, etc.
Send e-mail to: mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu with the command shown as send ...

Usenet by Agora
As an alternative to using gophermail servers to retrieve Usenet postings, you can also use Agora.
agora@dna.affrc.go.jp covers about 2687 Usenet newsgroups in the hierarchies: alt, aus, austin, ba, bionet, comp, control, de, fj, gnu, humanities, jp, misc, news, okinawa, rec, sci, soc, talk, tnn, tuskuba
To get a complete listing, retrieve these pages with the “SEND” command.

The 2nd through 4th messages are simlar to the first one. You can tell if a newsgroup is available at this site by looking for the word “GOOD” — this indicates that this newsgroup is carried by this Agora server.
To retrieve newsgroup postings from either of these Agora servers, send e-mail as follows, replacing the “[newsgroup]” with the name of the Usenet newsgroup you wish view. Remember to use only a valid Usenet newsgroup from the lists above.
To: agora server Subject: [leave blank] Body: send news:[newsgroup]
EXAMPLE READING USENET NEWSGROUPS – AGORA
Let’s suppose you would like to receive a list of Usenet postings to the Usenet newsgoup “rec.martial-arts”. How do you format the request? From the previous sections you should have retrieved the lists of Usenet newsgroups supported by the Agora servers. In the list of groups for “agora@dna.affrc.go.jp” I find this:
rec.martial-arts is GOOD
So I know this Agora server supports this newsgroup. The message I format to send to the server looks like:
To: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp Subject: [leave blank] send news:rec.martial-arts
You will be returned with a listing that looks (in part) like:

If I wanted to read any of the particular postings I would use the URL from the reference section and send a request back to the same Agora server. For instance, let’s say I wanted to read [5].
This method may not work as of 07Jan200 at the “agora@dna.affrc.go.jp” Agora site.
To: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp Subject: [leave blank] send news:rec.martial-arts3B1B99C8.25B440D0@heapy.com
As an alternate method to get a posting from this newsgroup, just send the document back to the Agora server with the document numbers of the postings you want:
To: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp Subject: Document requested (URL: news:rec.martial-arts) 3 8 9 10 112 221
where the numbers refer to the particular newsgroup postings you are interested in receiving.
NOTE: Make sure you include the subject line from the original posting from the Agora server.
Usenet by Google (was DejaNews)
This service lets you search through an archive of Usenet newsgroups and a rapidly growing number of publicly accessible mailing lists. The service is normally accessible via a web page but we can access it via e-mail methods.
The basic format of a request is to use the web page format http://groups.google.com/groups?q=[GROUP_NAME]
We replace the [GROUP_NAME] with the name of the Usenet Newsgroup we wish to retrieve.
For example, let’s retrieve the postings to comp.lang.perl.misc
To: www4mail@wm.ictp.trieste.it Subject: [leave blank] Body: send http://groups.google.com/groups?q=comp.lang.perl.misc
We will recieve a listing that looks like:

For each group is listed: name, number of articles (approximately), and number of subscribers in SUBSCRIBE, FEED and RFEED modes. USTAT [address] Get information about user subscriptions. User address is a regular expression in SH style. For example, command "ustat alex@*" will print information about users with name alex. For each user is listed: name, total number of groups, and number of subscriptions in SUBSCRIBE, FEED and RFEED modes. TIME Print current date and time. AGING OFF Turn off aging of subscribers. Usially server forget about silent user after 28 days of silence. AGING Turn on aging if it was turned off previously. QUIT Shows server that all commands are over. WARNING: don't use user name "uucp" or "news" to receive news - server ignores these names. In order to submit an article you should send the article with the header field "Newsgroups:" containing the comma-separated list of newsgroups (all newsgroups should be valid) to the address newsserv@LITech.NET. The default distribution of the message is the whole world, so you should think twice before sending your article. Remember it will be read by thousands or millions of readers around the world, so your message should not be offensive, should not violate copyright laws. Never write things already written by somebody. It's better to restrict distribution area to be as small as possible. You can do it using the header field "Distribution:". Valid distributions are: world, eunet, su, russia, moscow Example: % mailx newsserv@LITech.NET Subject: testing ~: headline Newsgroups relcom.test (continue) ~: headline Distribution su (continue) Twas brilling... . Posting to Usenet by e-mail
There are three methods of posting to Usenet Newsgroups
- Use a posting service via e-mail
- Use an e-mail to Usenet gateway
There are two styles of e-mail to Usenet Newsgroups gateways:
- The first requires a header. mail2news@ is generally the address, and there must be a Newsgroups: header. It must be Newsgroups: even if you’re only posting to one group. The requirement for this header means you must be able to insert such a header. Placing it in the message body is not the same.
- The second is the group.name@ style. If you want to post to alt.test, you would do so by e-mailing to alt.test@ and then the site name. Anything besides “group.name” must be left in place, meaning that in a “group.name-news@” address, you must leave in the “-news@” part.
NOTE: There is an exception to this second style at anon.lcs
For a current list of active and defunct usenet gateways, see Usenet gateways
- Use an anonymous remailer that allows the Anon-Post-To command.
For a current list of active and defunct anonymous remailers, see Anonymous servers
EXAMPLE USENET POSTING – mail2news gateway
This service allows you to post news articles to usenet through E-mail. It can be useful if you do not have access to a good news server, or if you wish to post through an anonymous remailer. If you don’t have access to a good news server, you may also be interested in reading news through an open NNTP server. You can find a lists of open NNTP servers at NewzBot!.
To post an article to usenet, mail it to mail2news@anon.lcs.mit.edu. You must specify the newsgroup(s) to which you want to post with a “Newsgroups:” header in your mail message. When posting to multiple groups, place all newsgroups in the same “Newsgroups:” header line, separated by commas (but NO spaces). For example, to post a message to alt.test and misc.test, place the following line in your mail header:
Newsgroups: alt.test,misc.test
Note that this service does NOT anonymize the news articles it posts. The address from which an article is mailed will become the return address of the posted news article.
The mail2news software passes mail messages directly through to the news server with almost no modification. It does not process “::” or “##” lines in mail, nor does it understand “Post-To:” commands. All mail received must already be a properly formatted news message (as described by RFC 1036) with a “Newsgroups:” line in the header of the mail message. Otherwise, the news server will reject the article and it will be bounced back to you.
To receive a list of all newsgroups reachable through this mail to news gateway, send mail to mail2news@anon.lcs.mit.edu with subject “list” and no “Newsgroups:” header. The complete list of available newsgroups is quite large (200+K 10,000+ groups), and can break many mailers. You can therefore query for particular newsgroups by fingering groups@anon.lcs.mit.edu. To obtain through E-mail a list of only those newsgroups starting with a particular pattern, you can include an egrep-style regular expression on the subject line. For instance,
Subject: list comp\.unix would list only newsgroups whose names begin "comp.unix". Subject: list .*linux would list all newsgroups whose names contain the substring "linux". Subject: list alt.*(security|privacy) would list all newsgroups beginning "alt" and containing either the word "security" or the word "privacy". Finally, Subject: list .*\.test$ would list all newsgroups ending ".test".
To see a copy of this message through finger, you can finger mail2news@anon.lcs.mit.edu. To receive a copy of this help message through E-mail, you can send mail to mail2news@anon.lcs.mit.edu with subject “help” and no “Newsgroups:” header.
If you cannot figure out a way to add a Newsgroups header to your mail messages, you can instead include the list of newsgroups to which you wish to post in the mail2news E-mail address. To post to group alt.test, for instance, you can send mail to: mail2news-YYYYMMDD-group.name@anon.lcs.mit.edu do the following:

Because I posted to the alt.test Usenet Newsgroup which gets hundreds of test posts a day, I used a newsreader to find my posting rather than e-mail methods. The reason is that these postings expire quickly due to the sheer number that are posted daily. Here is what I saw:

Mailing Lists by e-mail
Liszt is the world’s largest directory of e-mail discussion groups. It was available via e-mail to: liszter@bluemarble.net but this is defunct as of 28Aug99.
You will now have to use any of the web2mail servers and retrieve this web page http://www.liszt.com/ which contains the search form.
Archie by e-mail
Archie is a system for locating information files on the Internet. It was originally developed to assist network users in finding a specific FTP file among the thousands of files at hundreds of FTP sites around the world. Archie can be used locate other types of files in addition to those at FTP archives. Today archie like Gopher is almost entirely non-existant by e-mail and has moved to the web.
To perform an Archie search via e-mail, find the site from these Archie servers that is closest to you and then send your e-mail message.
In the body of your message you need to type
set mailto [your Internet address] find [searchterm] quit
replacing [your Internet address] with your e-mail address and replacing [searchterm] with what you want the server to search for. If you want to be a bit more sophisticated then see the Archie help file file or the Archie manpage.
I did an Archie search using the keyword “uudecode”. Archie returned to me a large listing in the following format:
Host ftp.iem.pw.edu.pl (194.29.146.3) Last updated 17:57 27 Apr 2001 Location: /FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/src/usr.bin DIRECTORY drwxr-xr-x 512 00:00 31 Mar 2000 uudecode Location: /FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/src/contrib/perl5/eg FILE -rw-r--r-- 416 00:00 2 May 1999 uudecode
What does all of this tell me? It tells me the address of an anonymous ftp site is
ftp.iem.pw.edu.pl (194.29.146.3)
the directory that the file is located in is
/FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/src/contrib/perl5/eg
and the name of the file is
uudecode
Archie doesn’t retrieve the file for you, but it does tell you exactly where the file that you are looking for is located.
We can also use some WWW Archie and ArchiePlex Gateways. You enter the keywords(s) that you want in place of the “xxxxxxxx”. For example, if you were looking for a uudecoder you could use “uudecode.bas” in place of “xxxxxxxx”.

Finger by e-mail
“Finger” is a utility that returns information about another user.
NOTE: By the end of 2000, most ISPs have disabled finger and all you will see when you finger a user is “connection refused”.
By default, finger displays information about each logged-in user, including his or her: login name, full name, terminal name (prepended with a `*’ if write-permission is denied), idle time, login time, and location (comment field in /etc/ttytab for users logged in locally, hostname for users logged in remotely) if known.
Idle time is minutes if it is a single integer, hours and minutes if a ‘:’ is present, or days and hours if a d is present.
When one or more name arguments are given, more detailed information is given for each name specified, whether they are logged in or not. A name may be a first or last name, or an account name. Information is presented in a multi-line format, and includes, in addition to the information mentioned above:
- The user’s home directory and login shell
- the time they logged in if they are currently logged in, or the time they last logged in if they are not, as well as the terminal or host from which they logged in and, if a terminal, the comment field in /etc/ttytab for that terminal
- the last time they received mail, and the last time they read their mail
- any plan contained in the file .plan in the user’s home directory and any project on which they are working described in the file .project (also in that directory)
If a name argument contains an at-sign, `@’, then a connection is attempted to the machine named after the at-sign, and the remote finger daemon is queried. The data returned by that daemon is printed. If a long format printout is to be produced, finger passes the -l option to the remote finger daemon over the network using the /W feature of the protocol.
Finger will display a greater detail of information for users that have a Unix .plan or .project file on their ISPs server.
To try out finger you could use a real e-mail address (useird) in palce of user@domain.com.

Nslookup by e-mail
NSLOOKUP usually is asked to map FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Names), e.g., ‘LISTSERV.AOL.COM’ to IP-addresses, e.g., ‘152.163.216.6’, via a DNS (Domain Name Service) server to supply the answer, but the DNS-server should also contain the “inverse” information, i.e., the data required to map the IP-address to a FQDN.
Here are some WWW – NS Lookup Gateways. You can enter either the host name or IP address in place of “xxxxxxxx” and the gateway will return the other.

NOTE: If you’re looking up a domain name from an IP address, some IP addresses do not have a record in the Domain Name System that matches a domain, even though there is a record associating a domain with that IP address.
Use only the IP address if you select the one below.

Traceroute by e-mail
This program attempts to trace the route an IP (Internet Protocol) packet would follow to some internet host by launching UDP (User Datagram Protocol) probe packets with a small Time To Live (TTL) then listening for an ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) “time exceeded” reply from a gateway. We start our probes with a TTL of one and increase by one until we get an ICMP “port unreachable” (which means we got to “host”) or hit a maximum (which defaults to 30 hops). Three probes are sent (which also can be changed) at each TTL setting and a line is printed showing the TTL, address of the gateway and round trip time of each probe. If the probe answers come from different gateways, the address of each responding system will be printed. If there is no response within a 3 second timeout interval, an asterisk (“*”) is printed for that probe.
Whois by e-mail
“WHOIS” is an Internet program which allows users to query a database of people and other Internet entities, such as domains, networks, and hosts, kept at the DDN NIC. The information for people shows a person’s company name, address, phone number and e-mail address.
If you’re looking for someone or you want to know where a particular Internet site is located.

UUdecoding e-mail
Here is a general method that will work for all UUDECODING:
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
The DOS version of uudecode is usually named UUDECODE.COM — Other versions are available and may be named UUDECODE.EXE.
- Have the uudecode.exe program available in a directory that is in your PATH statement. In my case, C:\UTILS
- Place all the uuencoded files (file1.uue, file2.uue, file3.uue, …) in a separate directory. In my case, C:\DOWNLOAD\UU
- Now all you have to do is type “uudecode file1.uue” The program will automatically decode the other associated files. The uudecode program will create a file with the name taken from within the uuencoded file, specifically, the “begin” line, (which might include a path).
SINGLE PART METHOD
If you are receiving a uuencoded file appended to the bottom of an e-mail message and not as a separate file attached to the e-mail, then you need to cut out the uuencoded part and make it a separate file.
For example, if you received a uuencoded message (see example below) you would use an editor or word processor (and save as ASCII) everything from “begin 644.zip” to the “end”. On the ‘Section’ line is the name of the file. In this case “test”. So you would name the file “test.uue”. When uudecoded it will have the name shown on the “begin” line, namely “test.zip”.
------------------------ example --------------------------------- From: Me To: You Subject: uuencode example The following is a test file. section 1 of 1 of file test < uuencode ... > begin 644 test.zip M=&AI;<R!I<R!A('1E<W0@=&\@:6QL:7-T<F%T92!U=65N8V]D960@;65S<V%G *92!F;W)M870N&@ M=&AI;<R!I<R!A('1E<W0@=&\@:6QL:7-T<F%T92!U=65N8V]D960@;65S<V%G *92!F;W)M870N&@ ...etc. ` end sum -r/size 56528/99 section (from "begin" to "end") sum -r/size 60578/55 entire input file ------------------------------------------------------------------
MULTI-PART METHOD (ALL PARTS ENCODED)
Here is the solution to uudecoding a file that is spread over many different e-mail messages (the multi-part decoding problem).
For example, if you received a 10-part uuencoded message (see example below).
------------------------ example --------------------------------- From: Me To: You Subject: uuencode example (part 1 of 10) begin 644 big.zip M=&AI;<R!I<R!A('1E<W0@=&\@:6QL:7-T<F%T92!U=65N8V]D960@;65S<V%G *92!F;W)M870N&@ M=&AI;<R!I<R!A('1E<W0@=&\@:6QL:7-T<F%T92!U=65N8V]D960@;65S<V%G *92!F;W)M870N&@ M=&AI;<R!I<R!A('1E<W0@=&\@:6QL:7-T<F%T92!U=65N8V]D960@;65S<V%G *92!F;W)M870N&@ etc... ------------------------------------------------------------------ parts 2 through 9 From: Me To: You Subject: uuencode example (part 2, etc. of 10) M=&AI;<R!I<R!A('1E<W0@=&\@:6QL:7-T<F%T92!U=65N8V]D960@;65S<V%G *92!F;W)M870N&@ M=&AI;<R!I<R!A('1E<W0@=&\@:6QL:7-T<F%T92!U=65N8V]D960@;65S<V%G *92!F;W)M870N&@ etc... ------------------------ example --------------------------------- From: Me To: You Subject: uuencode example (part 10 of 10) M=&AI;<R!I<R!A('1E<W0@=&\@:6QL:7-T<F%T92!U=65N8V]D960@;65S<V%G *92!F;W)M870N&@ ` end sum -r/size 56528/99 section (from "begin" to "end") sum -r/size 60578/55 entire input file ------------------------------------------------------------------
- From part 001 you would use an editor or word processor (and save as ASCII) everything from “begin 644.zip” to the end of the e-mail message. Save the 1st part as big1.uue
- For parts 002 through 009, you would use an editor or word processor (and save as ASCII) everything from after the Subject: line to the end of the e-mail. Save each part as big2.uue, big3,uue … big9.uu3
- For part 010, you would use an editor or word processor (and save as ASCII) everything from after the Subject: line to the “end” line. Save this part as big10.uue
MULTI-PART METHOD DECODING
Now you have three choices, depending upon the limit of your editor and the type of uudecode program you are using.
- If you have a smart uudecoder, all you have to do is to type “uudecode big1.uue” The program will automatically decode the other associated files. The uudecode program will create a file with the name taken from within the “begin” line of the uuencoded file (which might include a path). In this case it will be called “big.zip”
- If you have an editor that will handle large files, you can combine all the parts from 001 through 010 into one large file called “big.uue” Now all you have to do is to type “uudecode big.uue” to create “big.zip”
- If you don’t have an editor that will handle large files and you don’t have a smart uudecoder, then you can use the DOS command line and the “type” statement to combine into one large file.
From the DOS prompt (for example, C:\DOWNLOAD\UU)
C:\DOWNLOAD\UU> type big1.uue > big.uue C:\DOWNLOAD\UU> type big2.uue >> big.uue C:\DOWNLOAD\UU> type big3.uue >> big.uue C:\DOWNLOAD\UU> .... etc C:\DOWNLOAD\UU> type big10.uue >> big.uue
Now all you have to do is to type “uudecode big.uue” to create “big.zip”
MULTI-PART METHOD (PARTIALLY DECODED)
If you received files by e-mail with the first part decoded and attached and the rest of the parts uuencoded – here is the solution.
- Take Part 1 which is usually a ZIP or EXE file and is attached to part 1 of the message. UUENCODE it. Then, using a text editor, delete the lines at the end of the message beginning with the line with just a ` (back quote) on it and all of the following lines. The line after ` (back quote) should say “end” and lines after that should say “sum” with other parameters.
- Still using your text editor, insert or paste at the end of this uuencoded file the rest of the uuencoded parts.
- Save the file as whatever.uue and uudecode the entire file. You then will have a workable ZIP, EXE, etc. file.
Example: You receive a message that states that part 001 of 004 of TEST.ZIP is attached. You then get 3 other messages that are uuencoded Parts 002, 003, 004 of the same TEST.ZIP. Download all parts. Uuencode TEST.ZIP. Then, using a text editor, delete all the lines at the end starting with the line that has just a ` (back quote) on it.
Next paste in part 002, followed by part 003 and then part 004. Make sure that you remove any headers from parts 002, 003, 004 so that every line of code begins with a capital M. Next save the text as a text file and uudecode it. The resulting file should be the file that you ordered.
A simpler method to the multi-part problem.
- Extract the attachment (part 1 of the file — the decoded part) and name it file1.uue.
- Extract the other e-mail messages to files called file2.uue, file3.uu3, etc. where the 2, 3, etc. corresponds to the number of that particular section.
- Now all you have to do it to type “uudecode file1.uue” The program will automatically decode the other associated files. The uudecode program will create a file with the name taken from within the uuencoded file (which might include a path) — i.e. TEST.ZIP
NOTE: You can always tell the start of each uuencoded portion of a file because they begin with “M=”. The end of each portion is followed by a “`” (back quote) or sometimes a blank (” “).
MULTI-PART UUDECODING (ALL PARTS ENCODED) USING WINZIP
- In your e-mail program’s inbox, sort by date and hopefully all the parts will be sorted in order, like [001 of 100] through [100 of 100]. If not, manually move them around until they are in order.
- Select all 100 or ever how many there are, and save as one large text file with a name ending .uue
- Double-click on the .uue file and it will be automatically uudecoded by Winzip. Winzip automatically omits the e-mails’ headers, so you the user need not bother about stripping them from each e-mail message.
